"East to West" is a diptych of two 18" x 24" pieces (45.7 x 61 centimeters ) mixed media bas relief on wood panel painted in a warm off white lime wash paint with a variety of contrasting pops of colors and patterns. These area shallow reliefs of 1/4" inch and framed in 1.5" white oak floater frames. French cleat included for easy hanging.
This piece is part of the “Libertad” collection of bas-reliefs which marks a striking departure from my customary monochrome practice, embracing instead a spirit of colorful playfulness, sensuality, and release. Each piece appears to ripple with motion: wild, flowing curves carve their way across the surface, organic and unrestrained, like wind-tossed fabric or currents of water.
At the points where these arcs and curves intersect with others, the surfaces erupt in bursts of visual delight—tiny pockets of patterned reliefs, unexpected textural motifs, and pops of vibrant color.
The title, Libertad—Spanish for “freedom”—underscores the collection’s essence: an emancipation from the artist’s self-imposed constraints, an embrace of vitality, and a reveling in the possibilities of form and color.
